What is dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for a over hundred types of diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and dementia with lewy bodies. Symptoms can include gradual loss of memory, confusion, and problems with thinking, speaking and carrying out simple tasks.

10 warning signs of dementia:

  1. Memory Loss
  2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
  3. Problems with language
  4. Disorientation to time and place
  5. Poor or decreased judgment
  6. Problems keeping track of things
  7. Misplacing things
  8. Changes of mood and behaviour
  9. Trouble with images and spatial relationships
  10. Withdrawal from work or social activities

Dementia is not a part of normal ageing.

Dementia affects around 850,000 people in the UK and becomes more common with age, although it can develop in younger people. Most people who develop dementia are over 65, but it is not a normal part of growing old and most older people never develop dementia.

Everyday almost 600 people develop dementia in the UK. Diagnoses of dementia in Greenwich are predicted to increase by 30% by 2021 with numbers estimated to increase to over 2500. Over 100 people in Greenwich under 65 have a diagnosis of dementia.
