Educational Psychology Service

The Educational Psychology Service offers a range of approaches to help schools improve outcomes for children and young people experiencing difficulties in their learning and their social & emotional development.  In particular this means pupils with special educational needs, those at risk of exclusion and those whose life chances are impaired as a result of social and emotional deprivation.  Educational Psychologists work with teachers, parents, professionals and other staff to assess and identify needs, develop skills and design interventions to help improve educational attainment and emotional resilience and promote inclusive practice.

Eligiblity Criteria:

Children under 5:

Your child can receive support from the Educational Psychology Service if he or she is referred to us through the Early Years Co-ordination Team; or if the nursery or children’s centre your child attends decides that the support your child currently receives is not working well enough and that an Educational Psychologist’s advice would help to get a better understanding of your child’s needs and how best to help him or her. You will be asked to give your written consent to the Educational Psychologist’s involvement.

Children and young people aged 5 -25:

Your child can receive support from the Educational Psychology Service if the school he or she attends decides that the support your child currently receives is not working well enough and that an Educational Psychologist’s advice would help to get a better understanding of your child’s needs and how best to help him or her.

You will be asked to give your written consent to the Educational Psychologist’s involvement. Your child will also receive support from the Educational Psychology Service if the local authority decides that your child requires a statutory assessment. If your family live in Greenwich but your child attends a private school, your child would not normally receive support from an Educational Psychologist unless the school has purchased a service from us or employ their own Educational Psychologist. In this case you would need to pay for a private Educational Psychologist. Otherwise your child will only receive a service from us if the local authority decides that your child requires a statutory assessment. If your family live in Greenwich but your child attends a nursery, children’s centre or school in another borough, your child may be eligible to receive a service from that borough’s Educational Psychology Service.

Referrals:

Children under 5 with complex developmental or medical needs are referred to the Educational Psychology Service through the Early Years Co-ordination Team or by practitioners in the child’s early years setting or Children’s Centre.

All Greenwich LA schools plus Academies and Free Schools in Greenwich can request the involvement of an Educational Psychologist. However, the extent of that involvement will depend on the level of service the school has purchased from us. A very small number of schools employ their own Educational Psychologist.

In some circumstances the local authority may request the involvement of an Educational Psychologist.

You cannot request the involvement of the Educational Psychology Service yourself. If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour, learning or development you should talk to your child’s teacher or the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), Inclusion Manager or Head Teacher.

How to complain:

If you need to complain or discuss the service your child is receiving from the Educational Psychology Service, you can do this via the Principal Educational Psychologist, or through the Royal Borough of Greenwich complaints department.
