Go Beyond Respite Breaks

Formerly known as CHICKS, Go Beyond’s first breaks were held under canvas on a farm near Lydford Gorge in Devon. Whilst the charity was small, the vision was big.  Go Beyond saw the opportunity to make a lasting difference to young people by giving them a break from the challenges they faced in their everyday lives. They watched children grow in confidence through a week of outdoor adventure, friendship and support.  The charity’s name may have changed from CHICKS to Go Beyond but those core values still run through our breaks today.

In 1998, we moved from camping to a rented retreat near Milton Abbott in Devon and then in 2003, we took the leap of purchasing our first centre, ‘Coastal,’ in Cornwall. Most recently, we opened our Daleside Centre in Derbyshire in 2015, giving us the opportunity to support even more young people across the UK.

Making a referral:

We ask that each child or young person you would like to book onto a Go Beyond break:

  • is between 8 – 15-years-old
  • faces serious challenges in their life such as living in poverty, coping with caring responsibilities, suffering the effects of neglect, bereavement, abuse, or bullying, or any other situation that means they could benefit from a week to escape their worries and pressures
  • is able to attend for the full length of the Day Break or Residential Break

Whilst we have local transport arrangements in place please be aware that when referring a child onto a residential break they will either need to be escorted to the nearest railway station with chaperone to Par Station for our Coastal Centre and Derby Station for our Daleside retreat for arrival Monday afternoon where our breaks team and transport will meet them or have transport directly to our centres. They will also need to have return transport and chaperone from Par or Derby station on the Friday morning for their return journey home. For day breaks they must have daily travel to and from our centres or be able to access our local transport offer.

Referral Details

In order to refer a child for a free CHICKS break a professional who works with the child or the family will need to complete the Child Referral Form which can be found on our website. Once we have received the form a member of the Coordination Team will then call to discuss the child's case in more detail and suitable break dates will be discussed.

The CHICKS Coordination Team will allocate spaces once a referral has been made. Bookings are made according to availability and criteria.

Other notes

Children are referred to CHICKS for many reasons and situations; from being young carers to those who are living in poverty, subject to abuse, and any other situation that causes the child to have a tough time at home.We can also accept children who are on the child protection register or children who have attended CHICKS before (but not in the same year).

CHICKS cannot cover the cost of the transport to and from the child's home. We will collect the children from an agreed pick-up place, from which point the break is free until the Friday collection point.
