About the author – Bernice Langley (https://autismgifted-hands.com/)

I grew up in Sierra Leone and I then moved to the United Kingdom in 1993. I trained to become a Youth and Community Worker (BA) as well as a mental health and learning disability nurse.

It was during this time, that I became concerned about my own son’s speech delay. As he began intensive speech and language therapies, I changed my job and volunteered at his school. I learnt my son had speech delay which was part of autism spectrum disorder and I wanted to provide more personal hands-on support and understand his situation on a deeper level. I am proud to say that last year, my son finished university with a first class at the age of 21 and is now hoping to get a job in investment banking.

Through my experiences with my son and my own childhood story, I have became a passionate advocate for children with Autism on a global scale. I am committed to improving the quality of life for children with Autism, particularly those with fewer economic means and more social stigma in both the UK and the BAME group globally.

I volunteer extensively within the community, at hospitals, schools and community outreach programs. In 2018, I set-up the ‘Autism Gifted Hands’, which provides outreach services for children with Autism through sensory play and interventions. I am pleased to have my work recognised with awards including the ‘Research, Education and Workforce Development Award’ and the ‘Securing an Improved Patient Experience Award’ from the Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust.

I strive to help children with Autism globally through increasing awareness, fundraising and also by empowering them through education in order to help them reach their full potential in life. This book shares my story and the importance of what I do. It is for anyone who knows someone with autism or has an interest in autism.
