Trading Standards Scam Call Alert - Caller Claiming to be from the Police

Royal Greenwich Trading Standards have been made aware of scam phone calls from someone claiming to be calling from the Police.

The Scam calls are from people claiming to be from the Police, the scammers tell the victims that their bank cards have been used fradulently and that they need their assistance to catch the people responsible.

The victims are then told to ring 999 to check that this is a genuine call from the Police.

Victims telephone 999 straight away, however the phone line is left open so that they are in fact talking to the scammers.

Once the victim believes they are talking to the police they are told to go and buy certain high value goods, then to meet a person and hand over the goods at a venue suitable to them. The scammer then contacts the consumer again to buy more goods.

Remember:
- Police will never ask you to purchase anything.
- Police will never ask for your bank details.
- Never use the same phone that someone has contacted you on to check their identification.
- If you do have to use the same phone wait a good five minutes before you call them back.
