Most schools work with different agencies to support children who need it. This support is tailored to the children’s needs and can include:
- Educational Psychologists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Play Therapists
- Art Therapists
- Music Therapists
The Social Communication Outreach Service is another service schools can access.
What the Social Communication Outreach Service does
An outreach worker will visit the school for a certain amount of time each week.
They run interventions to support children with their social communication needs. These may be individual or group sessions to develop their social communication skills.
The outreach worker will set targets and review these twice a year in a report. They can also provide advice, resources and training to staff.
Who can access this service
The school is responsible for deciding if a child needs this support. A child does not need to have a specific diagnosis.
This could include children:
- with an autism diagnosis where schools wish to enhance the support provided by the Autism Outreach service
- on the waiting list for an Integrated Neurodevelopmental (IND) assessment
- with suspected specific social communication needs but do not have a referral to the IND clinic yet
Children can access this service for as long as the school sees fit.
How to access this service
Schools must pay to access the Social Communication Outreach Service. This can be for a full day or half-day per week.
