Travel buddies for young people with SEND

A new, active travel opportunity for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

It provides supported journeys for secondary school children including those who until now relied on home-to-school transport to get to school.

Individuals will be matched to a Travel Buddy who will provide 1:1 support walking or cycling to school. Adapted and standard bikes available depending on need.

Buddies are skilled and enthusiastic walk and cycle ride leaders who are trained in:
  • positive handling (for anxiety-related behaviour)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • SEND awareness and more

The scheme is open to young people (based on a pre-programme assessment) who live and go to school in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
