Types of needs and disabilities

There are many different types of special education needs and disabilities (SEND).  

These fit into four categories: 

  • communication and interaction needs 
  • cognition and learning difficulties 
  • social, emotional and mental health difficulties 
  • sensory and/or physical needs

Special education needs 

Special education needs may include: 

  • learning at a slower pace to their peers 
  • difficulty managing relationships 
  • speech or communication difficulties 

Disabilities 

A disability is a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial impact on daily life.  

This can include sensory impairments that affect sight or hearing and long-term health conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy.

Register your child

We keep a voluntary and confidential list of names and basic information about children and young people with disabilities, special or additional needs who live in Royal Greenwich.  

You can add your child to the Disabled Children and Young People’s Register.
