Who to talk to if you’re worried about your child’s development

Children under five years old

You can talk to your: 

They may share your concerns and make a referral to a child specialist such as a community paediatrician. 

If your child is in a nursery or pre-school, you can also talk to one of the staff or the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). They may decide to monitor your child’s progress more closely and advise you to request a referral if they share your concerns.

Children over five years old

You can talk to:

  • your child’s class teacher 
  • the school’s SENCO 
  • the School Nursing Service 

They may share your concerns and recommend you speak to your child’s GP for a referral to a specialist.

You may also be able to get additional support at school to help your child’s development.

If your concerns are not being listened to

If your child’s school is not concerned but you still are, you can contact our Special Education Needs Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS).  

We give free confidential and impartial advice and support to parents and carers in Royal Greenwich who have children or young people (up to the age of 25) with SEND.
