Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that can make reading, writing and spelling challenging.

Some people with dyslexia may also find it hard to process and remember things like instructions. This can affect maths and organisation.

Dyslexia and self esteem

Dyslexia can affect a child’s confidence and self-esteem.

To support your child:

  • Focus on strengths: while it is important to improve reading, writing and spelling, you should build on your child’s strengths. Use them to help your child learn and boost their confidence.
  • Praise them: always praise your child’s efforts not just results. It may take time to improve reading and writing so focusing on results may be discouraging.
  • Encourage your child’s passions: observe your child’s interests and help them discover what they enjoy doing. Remind them of their skills and successes in other areas when they’re struggling with schoolwork
  • Read for pleasure: find books that your child can read and enjoy on their own. You should also continue reading to your child so they can experience the pleasure of books and stay motivated
