If you think your child has dyslexia, contact the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). The SENCo may:

If the SENCo refers your child to STEPS, we will carry out a literacy or dyslexia assessment.

Before this happens, make sure your child has had a recent free NHS eye test at an optician. Your child must wear glasses for the assessment if they need them.

If you are worried about your child’s hearing, it might also be a good idea to ask for a hearing test from your child’s GP before we carry out any assessments.

Dyslexia assessment and report

If we decide to carry out a dyslexia assessment, this will help to identify your child’s strengths and what support could help their reading and writing.

We will then write a dyslexia report and recommend any further referrals if needed.

There is a waiting list for our dyslexia assessments. We have put together some useful resources at home that you can use while waiting for an assessment.

How we support your child in school

Once you have received the report, we will arrange a feedback meeting with you and the school SENCo to discuss what happens next.

If we think your child needs extra support, we can provide an individualised programme to help them with their reading and writing. We also train school staff to deliver these programmes.
