Overview

We work closely with schools to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who are starting school or moving to a new school stage.

This is also called transition support.

It is important to give yourself enough time to choose the right school for your child.

Support from primary and secondary schools on starting or moving

All schools must provide information about the process of moving in and out of their schools.

Special schools and schools with designated specialist provision (DSP) usually have their own processes. These may include:

  • a visit where an adult will support your child to visit their new school
  • staff visits between schools
  • resources to help prepare your child for the changes
  • transition passports or profiles for your child to help the new school staff understand their needs
