Support with transition to secondary school

Our outreach services help all secondary schools in Royal Greenwich meet the needs of children with SEND.

If you are choosing a school outside of Royal Greenwich, make sure to check what similar services are available.

If your child does not have an EHCP

Primary and secondary schools share detailed information on students once their placement has been confirmed. This usually occurs in the first half of the summer term and involves SENCOs from both primary and secondary schools.

The information is focused on children moving to a secondary school who may:

  • have SEND, especially those receiving SEN support
  • have an EHCP
  • are looked after children
  • have received behaviour support during primary school
  • have English as an additional language
  • be known to the attendance advisory service

If your child has an EHCP

At your child’s annual review meeting in Year 5, you will be able to state your preference for a secondary school.

In October of Year 6, we will consult with the schools of your preference. By December, the schools will respond and we will tell you the decision. If necessary, we will continue to consult more schools.

We will send out the final EHCP in mid-February.

By July, you will need to have made a final decision on your child’s placement.

Schools usually organise an induction day at the beginning of July to give students an introduction to being at secondary school.
