Roots and Shoots

Roots and Shoots has a 40 year legacy of delivering training to vulnerable people while developing its beautiful landmark site in Kennington as a haven for people and biodiversity. From a derelict site with a basic building in 1982, Roots and Shoots has grown to become a well established training organisation and an important London garden.

We take students from all London boroughs, with the majority residing in Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth. Every year we are training over 30 16-24 year olds who have had difficulty coping in the traditional educational system and help prepare them for the world of work.

We currently run a Study Programme, Supported Internship and a School Links programme.

Alongside this training we involve local schools and the wider community by establishing our site as an important green space for urban biodiversity.

Every student who attends Roots and Shoots can expect a programme tailored to their individual learning needs and employment goals. We've listed below the qualifications that a student can hope to achieve - these work with each other, with the Foundation Learning Programme.

Within the Vocational strand at Roots and Shoots we deliver Retail Skills, Floristry and Horticulture Skills. Within the Personal, Social Development (PSD) strand we deliver Employability and Personal Development all available at Award, Certificate or Diploma level.

English, maths and ICT training is available from Entry to Level 1. All qualifications are City & Guilds ensuring high quality and recognition by employers and colleges. As part of the tailored approach we can offer learner specific bolt-on courses to create outcomes closest to the young person’s ambitions.

Booking Information

Roots and Shoots is one of the most green and nature friendly venues within Central London! We hire out a number of our communal spaces as a venue for meetings and gatherings.

While Covid-19 remains a concern, we are limiting our capacity to 50% of it’s normal size:

• Main Hall (25-30pax)
• Meadow Room / Garden Room (10pax)
• Natural Roots Building (15pax)
• Other spaces on our site upon special request

We also provide healthy, vegetarian catering, frequently featuring ingredients grown on site as well as refreshments.
