Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (MCCAED)

MCCAED is a national and internationally recognised centre of excellence in the care of children and adolescents with eating disorders.

There are 4 parts to the service:

1. The EATING DISORDER CLINIC – provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with GPs in one of the following 7 boroughs: Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. All eating disorders are treated with the exception of ARFID. Like all parts of the service, we work closely with schools, GPs, local CAMHS teams, social care and all relevant agencies in a child’s life.

2. The ARFID CLINIC – provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), in the boroughs above and also accepts national referrals. ARFID has become more widely recognised as an eating disorder since 2015.

3. ITP – The Intensive Treatment Program (ITP) is our day service, which provides a highly effective alternative to inpatient care for the most unwell young people. It accepts referrals locally and nationally. Referrals need to be made by a CAMHS eating disorder team using a NHSE referral form (Form 1).

4. TRAINING & RESEARCH – The service has a long history of being in the vanguard of innovation for eating disorder treatment. The ‘Maudsley Method’ is a series of treatments, developed originally in our service, that are now used throughout the world as the first-line evidence-based treatments for Anorexia and Bulimia, two of the most well-known eating disorders. The service provides training for nationally and internationally to disseminate our research and treatment approaches.
