Carer's Allowance

Carers Allowance

You could get £67.25 a week if you care for someone at least 35 hours a week and they get certain benefits.

To qualify for this benefit, you do not have to live with the person you care for – they could be your partner, relative, neighbour or friend.

Criteria for claims

You can claim Carer’s Allowance if you are aged 16 or over and you:

  • spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone who gets Attendance Allowance (AA), DLA care component (middle or higher rate) or the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment; and
  • are habitually resident in Great Britain and have lived here for 104 weeks in the past 156 (2 years out of the last 3); and
  • do not earn more than the earnings limit – currently £123 a week (April 2019 figure). But some earnings can be ignored – get advice.

You must also satisfy the residency conditions. For example, you must be 'habitually resident' and must have lived in Great Britain for at least two out of the last three years.
